How to stop leash biting- clicker dog training

This is a video tutorial on how to teach your puppy not to bite at his leash. Don’t start the training games, AS the problems are occurring. Start the games when your puppy is calm and relaxed to set him up for success. If your puppy is very excitable, you could have your puppy on leash or in a pen while someone else does the distraction further away from you at first so that the puppy can cope. Teaching default calm behaviors like a ‘settle’ will increase your puppies abilities to cope with exciting situations and make the correct choices.

My collie bites the lead whenever a motorbike goes past (she ALWAYS goes utterly mad when she hears or sees one) or when a car passes. I guess its just because she cant get to the bike or car. She sometimes does when we set off on a walk. I just say `leave it` and stop until she does. No problem. I like the way you are so calm and so sweet to the dogs on your videos, including your own ofcourse. What a lovely pup!

My english mastiff (Thor) and my fox terrier (steppy) keep crying when put the leash, any other ideas?

    Man, i wish i had a clicker.

I love your videos, they are the best put together ones I’ve seen!

But I have a question for you: How do you get your puppy used to wearing his collar? Should I click and reward every time I put it on? He scratches at it all the time even though it’s a nice and soft leather one that fits him correctly.

@kikopup My dog has learnt to behave perfectly on the long line, but he knows as soon as he is off the long line, he can get away with what ever he wants. I don’t know what else I can do for an inbetween step- a lighter long line perhaps- like some string or fishing twine?
He’s an older dog and I’m having difficulty finding motivation that works in his old age too- probably a contributing factor in the above.
    Any ideas!

Kiko has other videos of much bigger dogs…. such as a Mastiff. But you’re right, perhaps KikoPup might consider a video demonstrating the progress of a shelter dog that pulls like a bull.. from beginning to end.

  20. Wtflolyay says:

All of a sudden hes become nervous around larger dogs. Hes had a few try to attack him and now he will lunge and bite dogs bigger than him, if he doesnt do that he curves away from them avoiding eye contact. What training method would i use for that? Its making walks not very enjoyable at all..

  21. kikopup says:

You could have him on a harness and long line so he feels off leash, then when he sees the stimuli- click him, and get him to come to you for the reward. If he doesnt come, simple prevent him from getting to go to the stimuli. Then once youve done that a while- as the stimuli happens, you can say good boy! and if he comes to you of his own accord you could reinforce that if you liked etc etc

  22. kikopup says:

zsianz1 has a new video on teaching fetching different objects

  23. kikopup says:

and I Agree 🙂 Setting dogs up for success should be the new fad in dog training, and I hope it doesnt go away.

  24. kikopup says:

The video is called “No Pulling!: Clicker Dog Training ” also the black dog did give me blisters on my hands- that WAS indeed the most difficult leash puller I have encountered! Even though I used to work at a shelter with Katrina dogs that only got to leave their cages 1 a day- Rotties Mastiffs… None pulled as intensely as this Black dog… but of course you cant really tell because the dog did so well in the video. Clicker training is about setting dogs up for success

  25. kikopup says:

Here is a video of me walking a Saint Bernard that pulls on his first lesson. All the dogs I have in all my videos (besides my own dogs) where chosen for the specific subject because they have issues with it. I usually dont get footage of the dog doing the “bad behavior” because if you know that practicing the behavior is reinforcing, then why would you get the dog to do it just to have a good video? this vid I happened to get a shot of the dog tugging the leash by accident

  26. MyMaltipooOliver says:

Wow!! Oliver is always interested in other people and dogs and because we do agility nwe really need him to stay with us. Thank you so much!!

  27. mattsthe2 says:

ohiokken i have this same issue

  28. ohiokken says:

I did this with my puppy (9 weeks) and it worked initially, but then it was time to go back inside and he just sat down and refused to walk. I offered toys, noises, food and what have you but it didnt work. In the end I had to carry him to the door – is he just stubborn? did I exorcise him for too long or am I just being impatient?

  29. Faya Mertens says:

The job of Cesar is not to make the dog love him. What most people seem to forget is that the dog behavior was never corrected by their owner(s). First he has to introduce himself as the new leader and make the dog submissive, than work with both the dog AND owners and teach them positive reinforcement.

If you use positive reinforcement from the beginning (as a puppy) you already have proven that you’re the leader. You provide food, determine when (s)he can play, when it’s time to sleep, etc.

  30. RaiNbowxXWinGs says:

Does this work with older dogs too?

  31. rrsd69 says:

    cool!!!!!

  32. Charamia2392 says:

Oh no!! Now, I feel so bad!! I’ve been having my dog on a leash attached to his neck collar ever since I got him!! He’s now 1 year and 4 months old and he pulls A LOT when I take him out on a walk and the truth is I always had suspicions it might be quite harmful for his thin, sensitive neck but now that you also said it, I feel terrible. Do you think I might have damaged his neck so extensivelly that if I started using a harness right away, his neck wouldn’t get better?

  33. SheaandBekah says:

when I go to the park all my dog does is sniff the ground (he is a marker) and ignore me

  42. catmauss83 says:

I realy realy love your videos!! We just started with the clickertraining and my puppy (9 months old) loves it aswell!! Have you got a Video, that shows, how to get rid of jumping up at people? he started with it a couple of weeks ago :S

  43. AllAmericanTeam says:

I love these games. I do them with all my puppies and truthfully have never had a pup that didn’t want to respond to me when I called their name or said come…it’s such a great feeling.

  44. catomajo79 says:

I am so impressed by your info and videos… and your videos help me to clearly see what you mean. I’ve been trying to find every video you have posted!
Do you have an online site?

  45. ChibiBritishGir says:

Cesar Millan? He trains on the philosophy that dogs are pack animals, which they -are!- He breeds obedience in the dogs through obeying the trainer as the Pack leader. There’s no violence, just sternness and domination – he never says anything about “don’t cuddle your dog”, or “don’t give your dog any love”.

  46. MsZoraZ says:

I know, right? He acts like they are robots and aren’t supposed to have personality or feeling. Dogs are our friends, not our slaves!

  47. MsZoraZ says:

I love your videos, they are the best ones available, and totally free!
Question: Where do you recommend I buy a harness and treat side bag? I already have a treat bag but I hate it, it’s so bulky. And my dog’s harness doesn’t fit her properly (she’s broad chested.) Thanks so much! 😀

  48. BohoGreen4 says:

Could you possibly do a video on how to teach a dog not to hunt cars, bikes or joggers, while walking on a slack leash?
I would LOVE to know your perspective on this issue. I am currently learning clicker training in order to stop my dog from doing it. but I find it hard to teach her to ENJOY the walk(sniffing and investigating the surrounding) on a loose leash, while at the same time ignoring the fastmoving cars and joggers besides her.
