I recently just got a 3 year old rescue and she does not stay in the yard and when we are taking her for a walk she sometimes jumps up on us and this is difficult because she is a lab and I am 11. How could I teach he to stay and not jump?

Hey Zak I just got a 2month old pitbull-akita mix puppy about what 4-5 days ago. So far he’s newspaper trained but will occasionally go somewhere other than the newspaper even when he’s in the room where his newspaper is 2 I’m trying to teach him sit with the dog treats the way you said do it and it seems he will sit only for the food and not after i say sit. When i try sit without the food he won’t listen? I know patience is key so how long will the sit training take?

i took my 15 month old blue healer Pyrenees mix on a 20 mile bike ride averaging 10 miles per hour last summer,it didn’t even put a dent in her energy level

agree. He seems to indirectly down people like Cesar Millan or put himself above and he comes off cocky and just plain smart mouth to people’s comment. everyone has an opinion and he can be narrow minded. but a good trainer none the less.

  9. Joe Parrotta says:

Yeah, my Siberian Husky could learn to stay on the property.

She would disagree and leave anyways, but she’d know she’s not supposed to.

hi Zak! We are going to the local shelter to choose a dog this weekend! I’m thrilled!! I’ve been watching your videos for years now, even though the time wasn’t right for us to have a dog. We are excited to now be at a point in our lives that we can invite a new friend into our home. Thank you for helping us prepare for this exciting relationship! I know I’ll be referencing your videos for years to come! You are the best!

Hi Zak, i have an 81/2 year old, what we think to be a bichon or poodle, he is very loving, playful, and smart. However his barking is out of control! he will bark at any and everything and it is very difficult to get him to stop. from this video i know you said that excersise will help the problem but, whenever we start walking him on as a routine, it always stops do to other prioraties and lazieness, and then we dicepline by screaming at him, putting him in time out,and scaring him. any advice?

I have a Husky/Malamute and he used to stay in the yard and i wouldn’t have to supervise 30mins at a time I’d say- until my boyfriends friend came over and stayed with us for about 2 months with his dog and his dog was out not on a leash with my Husky/Mal and ran out of the yard into the neighbors yard and their neighbors yard. My dog saw that behavior and now he does the same thing.. (SO WATCH YOUR FRIENDS DOGS) If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

    Hi Zak,
I have a border collie-springer spaniel mix who will stay in the yard, as long as there are no distractions around. She comes when I call her, and she gets praised when she stays in the yard, but that doesn’t stop her from running after the neighbor children/squirrels and birds. I’m scared that one of these days she’ll run out into the street. My friends have told me I can’t do much because it’s her instinct to chase things. But I have to be able to do something. Any advice?

Dude great video! Def going to follow along more! “Curiosity is a smart dog” I found this video today after my dog deciding to run two doors down and excitingly run into my neighbors house who had family who just arrived. 7 months old curious boxer here! I’m going to try the long leash deal and keep a verbal barrier and reward him. Thanks for the video!

  19. najtrows says:

Awesome! Loving this! My dog seems to be worried and barks as soon as anyone is walking in the stairs outside (we live in a flat) and just lies in his bed barking… I guess that he would need atleast a one hour walk every day or something (i guess i could do with that aswell 😛 )

he is a mix between Coton de Tuléar and Papillon 🙂

    Hi Zak,
So I just got two new dogs, a terrior mix and a poodle, and my terrior mix enjoys running out the door before I can even tell her to stay back. She’s and the poodle has learned stay, but she can’t seem to apply when the door is open. She has run off several times and one time she was gone for a night. Do you have any suggestions?

  21. jerome sampson says:

    great video

  22. michaelkitselaar says:

do you have a book out?

  23. 3Buffylover says:

I was waiting for someone to give this predictable, yet moronic reply. If you only have owners that have to spend as much time as Zak to train a dog, then dogs would no longer be domesticated animals. People spend time with dogs for work, but as time went on dog populations exploded. If it weren’t for normal people that spend normal time training a dog, the demand for dogs would have declined to a level where dogs are not in out homes.

  24. Marxism5 says:

There are a number of good breeds of dogs that don’t require the time and energy of a working dog like a border collie. But if you’re really having a big issue with finding enough time to give your dog a healthy amount of interaction every day, then perhaps having a dog just isn’t for you. There’s nothing wrong with admitting that you just can’t devote the time and effort to a dog, and foregoing it. It’s just that trying to take shortcuts is damaging to everyone.

  25. kurt9898 says:

can you teach your dog to jerk you off

  26. dorian watson says:

These techniques also work on women, but instead of snacks, just use money – Actually, snacks might work on some too.

  32. Ellen Ruddy says:

hi i have my first dog, at age 50, she’s a beautiful miniature terrier, I have been following your training guides and she will ‘sit’ ‘stand’ and ‘lie down’, she’ll even ‘leave’ and ‘fetch’ and bark on cue and stay quite… all going well I hear you say but no I have a problem… she will do as commanded but jump back up straight away if not rewarded straight away or if I wait she will get cross and jump around trying to play with me, my question is how do I get her to stay in Position?
