This video is a how to on how to change your dogs emotional response to something they are frightened of. The example in the video is my dog Kiko who suddenly became fearful of crossing the kitchen floor. Common issues with dogs can be- shiny floors, stairs, man hole covers, grates, metal, wet grass, a crate they had a bad experience in… the list goes on. This same technique can be used in all those situations. Do you have any tips on how to break in my puppy being in the car? He gets really nervous and drooly. I’ve tried spending time with him in it and feeding him in it and tried to treat him as we drive around.
Nice video! Love how you place your food for position or movement depending on what you want!
The only thing is isn’t counter conditioning (that’s a type of respondent conditioning). This is operant conditioning because the consequence, the click and treat, is what is changing the behavior.
Love your videos though, they’re great!
I need to do this with the bathtub…
you are an expert!!!
I know this is REALLY old, but I don’t know if your question was answered or not.
Emily has taught her dogs how to “Settle” even when she’s working with another dog. As the owner of two dogs, dogs also know when the click (or “Yes”) is for them. They are quite smart!
Any dog can slip while running on a slippery floor, they just need to know how to walk calmly on them. This really doesnt have anything to do with her legs. She just slipped while running and got scared, now she knows to walk calmly and confidently on slippery floors.
This was her learning how to walk on the floor calmly without slipping.
I love your videos! new subscriber! thank you so much
I must say that I do not understand the clicker; it must have been part of this dog’s training all along. Also, I don’t think it would be so bad to put down a rubber backed carpet strip through the kitchen for the poor handicapped dog so that it doesn’t slip and slide. You said yourself that it was a miracle it could even walk, let alone across a slippery floor. HELLO!
kiko looks like a chihuahua and italian greyhound mix
i need help, my dog hates baths, and water at all.. how can i get her to like water?
sad
A big THANK YOU for this video! My dog is super scared of slippery floors as well and I have really tried everything to get him to relax. It hasn’t exactly been easy, but I will certanly try this method to build his confidence to the slippery floor.
Clicker training works on everything from dogs to elephants to hermit crabs to fish to, yes, cats. 🙂
I just got a new rescue Red Heeler and she’s very scared of the bathroom. We’ve been using your technique and she can now come all the way in and put her nose on the side of the bathtub. Hopefully in the next couple weeks or so we can give her the bath she desperately needs :)
How would you get a small dog to get over the fear of large objects in general? I have 2 small dogs, and they are scared of anything large, even just a ballon.
Just starting out using youtube and your videos are one that I follow regular. Thanks.

Great video.I met you at Liberty Sta and U gave us a clicker 2 help get my dog’s attn at the park…it works at home all the time, but not at the park. Here’s my dilemma. My dog is afraid of vacuum clnrs, plastic bags (the sound they make when they’re stepped on or balled up) and sudden movements. He loves walks, people, and other dogs. He is NOT motivated by food or praise and doesn’t like affection. We don’t know where to start with him. He’s 2 1/2 rescue pit, akita, pointer.Had him 2 years.
DO all chihuhua’s have no joints in their ankles?
I know this sounds stupid but can this work on cats?
I love your videos! You make it look so easy! I haven’t found a treat that my Bichon feels enticing enough to work for! She just can’t be bought for food or attention.
