What can I do if my puppy is now SCREAMING bloody murder when I put him in
his crate and jumps at the door? I tried to follow all the getting used to
it tips, and that made him like his crate, he spends a lot of time in
there, but whenever I close the door, it´s like OMG and he freaks out. Do I
just let him cry? Do I sit next to it? Help please! 🙂

My puppy is 8 months old now, from day one he has slept in a large crate in
the kitchen, goes to bed at 9.30pm and i take her out at 6.30am

What I did for my puppy is i got her a small sized cage (the most she will
grow is 4-6 lbs) so she has enough space. We put a towel for bedding(she
isn’t potty trained yet), her food and water bowls, and a training pad.

It sounds like you have a system that is working. You said she is a puppy,
so most likely she will outgrow this behavior and sleep later in the day.
Just be careful that she doesn’t destroy anything. I would prefer a crate
or a pen instead of free access to the house. Good luck!

My cockerspaniel puppy sleeps in the kitchen. we lock her up in there with
her flap open and she knows to go outside to do potty and wee so she’s fine
about that but then at around 5am onwards she wakes up,goes outside and
starts barking at which point i open the kitchen door and she can roam
around the house (she usually sleeps outside the bedroom door) she doesn’t
have any accidents since she’s already done her buisness is this okay?xx
    reply asap please 🙂

There are different viewpoints on vaccinations and puppy safety. Ultimately
you have to use your judgment. I prescribe to the notion that once a puppy
has their second round of Parvo, Distemper, etc. they can be in clean
environments (not dirty dog parks). If you wait until a puppy has all their
shots, their is a risk of improper socialization and behavior problems.
Weigh the risks of both and decide for yourself. There is always a risk of
a puppy getting some type of illness even with all shots

So you’re saying we should take the puppy out ? My friend got a puppy and
the veterinarian said that she should keep the puppy in the house until he
is done with all the vaccines so he cannot get sick.

@ajeff Millman I might get a Japanese spitz puppy about 8’months old and my
mum is at work for 7 hours and can’t come home what should we do with it
because no one can come home in the day and we don’t like the idea of
someone comeing in our house to feed our puppy we would like to feed it so
it gets used to us PLZ help

You will just have to work through it at this age for a few weeks until his
sleep schedule gets a bit more regular. Similar to having a human baby,
puppies this age have their own sleep schedules. They often go full speed,
fall asleep and wake up when they are ready. Older dogs regulate their
sleep patterns better. I would talk to the neighbors and explain what is
going on, and explain that it won’t be forever. Try and exercise him more
before bed, and play with him a bit after going potty.

I just got a 6 week old maltese puppy and he does wake up several times
during the night…he sleeps in my bedroom so I walk him out to the balcony
to do his business and he does, but the problem is he usually wants to play
in the middle of the night! He cries and whines when I ignore him & since
we live in an apartment the noise is bound to be an issue for the
neighbors! Plus waking up the next day sleep deprived is taking a toll on
me..what do i do to get him to sleep all night?!

  12. Jeff Millman says:

I understand if you can’t take him out at night, but it is better if you do
not use the crate as a potty location. If he can’t hold it through the
night, use a separate area such as a bathroom lined with pads or newspapers
    as a potty location.

  13. MyLittleDogVlogs says:

im not able to take my puppy out at night to go for a wee or a poop so what
I do is put puppy pads in his crate at night so if any accidents to happen
it will be on the pad. I cant take him out at night cause my house
downstairs has an alarm on at night only my mum and dad know how to turn it
off so I cant go out at night with him.

My Dog Papi Sleeps W/Me… He has since he was 6 Weeks old! I know…
Bad!!! But I wouldn’t Have it ANY Other way! He’s Pee Pee pad trained &
Outdoor trained & he doesn’t bark at night & he lets Me know when he’s
gotta go potty! If not he goes on the pad during the night! But he’s only 6
    Lbs… So… 🙂

  15. Jeff Millman says:

So . . . you have figured out a way to make it work for both of you. What
you are doing is not good or bad, it is working for you.

  16. Jeff Millman says:

@Spertrun Thanks for the “thoughtful” comment. I really hope you are
joking. Most trainers recommend using a crate these days. If used
correctly, crates are a humane way of keeping a dog safe. Do you disagree
with using a crib for a baby as well? Just asking.

  17. Jeff Millman says:

Thanks for your comment, but I disagree. It has nothing to do with the
quality of the breeder. Dogs pee on beds all the time. It is great that
your dogs don’t but dogs do pee on the place they sleep sometimes. Puppies
should be in crates for the amount of time they can hold it. If they are
going to be alone for a longer period of time, they should be in a
long-term confinement area such as an exercise pen with puppy pads. Puppies
can learn to alert someone that they need to go.

  18. Singleattackfucker says:

Your advice is stupid. Ya my mom and dad tried that the dog was barking for
2 hours and guess where it got us NO WHERE all she did was throw up from
the constant crying when i took here out she was shaking like crazy the dog
was terrified. So if anything i would rather take this guys advice then to
ever try something as cruel as that ever again.

  19. Jeff Millman says:

You are using a long term confinement area, and that is fine to put him in
there if you can’t walk him within the time span of his limit. If he goes
potty in there, that is not considered an “accident”. Leave the crate open
if he isn’t going potty in there. He can sleep in there and go potty in the
    other area.

  20. Lori Smith says:

    I’m with you!

  21. Jeff Millman says:

colonia. Please share with everyone where you recommend dogs are when
people are out of the house? If you say that they are in a “puppy proofed”
room or enclosure of any kind, a crate is simply a smaller version of that.
I care about my dogs and my house and want both to be safe when I come
home. If you provide adequate exercise and training to a a puppy, they are
often sleeping in their crate anyway. Please share. I am curious. You don’t
have to use a crate, but a puppy has to stay safe somehow

  22. Lori Smith says:

I agree with you Jeff, they love having their own place to call their own.
I know that if I can’t watch my puppy right now that they are safe being in
    the kennel.

  23. Jeff Millman says:

That is right. Puppies do ask for things by barking, but they will get used
to being alone if they are taught properly. It also important to give
proper exercise so they are tired in the crate. Thanks for the comment.

  24. admra says:

Do puppies require more sleep than people do though? I sleep at around 12
at midnight and wake up at 6am. I’m worried that if I keep my first foster
puppy in my bedroom, it wouldn’t get enough sleep.

  25. SENSUALBLISSINSFL says:

Thank you Jeff for the advise, unfortunately he was so loud that I had to
return him and my heart is broken, have not stopped crying, I love him so
much. I never considered separation anxiety when I got him (I have always
owned cats before and this was never an issue). Puppy energy is amazing,
there will be no other like him. Is time to move to a house and I will get
another dog where I will no have this issue of neighbors complaining…now
I am going back to my corner and cry some more.
