I have the Innotek 5100 system with 1000+ ft of fence wire.

On Tuesday 04/03/2012, my property was hit by lightning.
It destroyed two computers, DSL modem, Router, Two network switches, Plasma TV, Roku player, several other small electronic items and my water well pump.
Everything except the well pump was on UPS battery backup units that had surge protection and they still fried.

The fence wire was melted in 10 spots and had to be replaced.
The LP-4100 surge protector was charged black inside and out.
The wire was blown in half where it enters the surge protector , but my main fence unit is still working.

I am impressed that this surge protector worked so well in the face of such a large lightning strike.

I went through 2 other transmitters before I learned that lightning/storms is what was shorting them out. We have been through numberous storms this summer already since I purchased the lightning protector and have NOT had one problem!!! Totally a MUST HAVE!! It might be an extra $30 that you really don’t want to spend at the time, but if you compare to the $100+ that you’d have to spend to get a transmitter. Not to mention not having a transmitter to keep your loved ones in your yard and save……so incredibly worth every single penny!

We had our system installed and running for about 8 months, but a lightning strike a block or so away put enough charge in the area to burn up the main unit. I knew this lightning protector was available, but took the gamble initially. After getting the main unit replaced I immediately ordered this and installed it in about 5 minutes. It’s not designed for a GFI style outlet, as it wants to screw into the center post of the receptacle. As in most modern homes, the garage outlet in my case was a GFI – but the transformer sits nicely on the unit without using the screw, so all seems well. I haven’t had another close strike yet – so I guess the jury is ultimately out still. Let’s face it – it’s either 5 stars cuz’ it works or 1 cuz’ it don’t! Time will tell – but I’d recommend you pick one up.
