You are welcome, Jun! Good luck.

    Thank you Jeff!

Then add more time/steps and only come back if he is quiet. The key is to
prove to him that the way to get you to come back is to be quiet. Good luck.

  4. Jeff Millman says:

Absolutely. Treatment and prevention of separation anxiety looks similar.
Basically you need to ignore whining, but also reward quiet. The key is to
practice for such short departures, that he is not pushed too far. It is
doubtful that he has sepanx, but you want to make the crate a pleasant
experience. Turn your back, say, “Yes!” or ‘click’ if you are using a
clicker and then give him a treat. Take one step away and repeat. If he
whines, remain turned around until he is quiet and then reward.

my 5 months old whippet is doing ok on house training, but the problem is
that he will keep whining whenever he is in his confinement area. I learned
from research that puppies should spend most of their first year confined,
and the best way to deal with whining is ignoring him. But even when he
eventually tired himself out and calmed down, if he notice any movement of
me (walking by his x-pen, sit down and get up from the chair etc.) he will
start whining again. Any tips on this?

…(continued) The next night I placed her in her playpen with food/water
and a piddle pad in my room and she cried and was trying to get out all
night. I left her in there anyways. Last night I tried leaving the doors of
the playpen open with a dimmed reading light around the pen allowing her
access to her piddle pad and food/water and placed her bed right beside the
pen. This morning I noticed there were no accidents and she got up and
walked right into the pen and pottied (yay). …continued

Good day, I really like your videos. My question is : can we use the
confinement area at night instead of having to go outside with the puppy so
that he can makes his potty?

  9. Jeff Millman says:

Hi ThaDeka, you should visit WatchandTrain and ask questions on my forums
    if you need more help.

  10. TheHJ says:

Thank you so much for the INFORMATION!. 😀

  11. Jeff Millman says:

That is a good question. Pay attention to his anxiety and patterns over
time. If he makes a certain noise and you take him out and all he wants to
play, then ignore that noise the next time. Normally potty signals are more
frantic. Also, make sure he is in the crate periodically throughout the day
and you are rewarding him when he is quiet so he learns that being quiet in
the crate is a good idea.

Hi Jeff. Great video. At night I plan to crate my pup next to my bed for
his comfort, having took him to the toilet etc before but if he starts to
whine and cry at night do I assume he wants attention or the potty, and if
I do take him to potty and all he wanted was attention… am I rewarding a
behaviour and teaching him that moaning at night will get my attention?

What type of confinement would you recommend for a 25 lb 1 year old dog
(able to jump), but still not trusted to be 100% alone/free range in the
    apartment?

  14. Jeff Millman says:

Glad you like the videos. You absolutely can use the confinement area at
night, if you wish. That is especially useful if you live in a cold place
(like Chicago where I live) and it is too cold for you and/or your puppy.
The more you can teach your puppy to go outside, the better, but the main
thing is to avoid accidents. Feel free to join my forums to ask questions
for free. I also have a newsletter that you can sign up for as well with
training tips – have a great day!

I have a 12 week old yorkie poo and I have a question about her sleeping
arrangements. At first I had her sleeping in her bed on my bed (only for a
few days). She did really good with waking me with a panting noise so I
could take her to the potty. But one night she pottied on me while I was
sleeping (smh… I thought I messed myself until I realized it was her,
    lol). (continued on next post)

  16. Jean Jospitre says:

hey jeff your videos are great they have helped me sleep lol/ How do i stop
her from crying in her cate and being happy to get in?

  17. Shanica Noakes says:

… (continued) I am new to pet owning on my own and I am not sure if this
is something I should continue or should she be sleeping in her pen/crate
in/out of my room????? Please Help!

Hi Jeff. Great Videos!! We got 9months old puppy a week ago. He is not
potty trained yet and can hold about 9hours during the night and he hasn’t
been making any accident for a few days now(during the night) My question
is how often do I have to take him out and how long do I have to wait?
Sometime he just wondering around and doesn’t do it…:( One time I waited
hour and half!! Also we live in townhouse no backyard and he wants to go
for a walk not to stay same place for potty. Is it ok?

Hi,,im getting a 8 motnh old puppy, and im confused after the many videos
ive seen about potty trainin,,,yours was more clear since it combines both
training the confiment area and crate.poeple work up to 8h a day or more so
puppy must be in confinement area,,how about at night?do you have to leave
him in con.area or inside crate with closed ?isnt waste of time to first
teach him to potty in if the aim is to do it only out??helpp

  22. Jeff Millman says:

Congrats on your new puppy, and thanks for the kind words about the videos.
Sounds like you are doing really well. If you want him to go immediately
when you take him out, try this: take him to your desired location, say,
“Go potty” (or other cue) and wait 3-5 minutes at most. If he goes potty,
say, “Yes!” and give him a fantastic treat. If he doesn’t go, bring him
inside and monitor his activity or put him in the crate. Try in 15-60
minutes until he goes. also visit watchandtrain forums

My dog is 2 yeats old and my mom decided to teach her to go potty on the
balcon. We usually had a baby diapper that you put on the baby crip , but
when she learned how to use it it was so smelly -.- the only problem with
the balcon is that she loves just to watch the outside. So when its night
she just go to the window of the balcon and start crying. My bro is getting
pretty angry cus when he let her out its random she will either pee or stay
there with minutes. HELP! what should i do?!

  24. Jeff Millman says:

You are welcome. It works out training a puppy to go inside and outside as
long as you are working on both. Pads when you are out of the house, walks
and treats for going potty outside when you can. It will work!

  25. Jeff Millman says:

The safest option is a crate for a jumper. You can buy exercise pens that
are 48″ in height, so that might be an option as well, depending on the
jumping ability. It can be any size as long as there aren’t housetraining
issues. Small crates are useful to motivate a dog to hold it longer. If
this isn’t an issue, then it can be as big as budget/space allow.
