www.pamsdogacademy.com My Puppy’s first clicker crate training session. I was really impressed! So smart. I was going to call him Zoom until we started working on recalls and it just did not really sound right. It comes out weird! So, he still does not have a name. 🙁

A crate is an excellent tool to help manage your young puppy or dog’s behavior. They also speed up the housetraining process. Pt3: If you take your pup out more often to her potty spot, PRAISE her for going out there, keep repeating that process. If she starts to go potty inside, pick her up and take her to her potty spot. When she finishes going outside PRAISE her, even if she did originally start to go inside. The bottom line is that she did go potty outside and that needs to be praised and even treated (with yummy meat or cheese) for going outside. 🙂 Hang in there! You can do it. You can make changes!

Pt 2: Help your dog learn what it is that you do want instead of punishing what you do not want. She will learn that the good things get rewarded and she will do those things more often. 🙂 We all do things that get rewarded. A kid gets praise from a parent and they will be more likely to do that good behavior again to get more praise. The same goes for our dogs. It takes time, commitment, consistency, and your dog needs to learn she can trust you. Trust that she is safe with you.

The key in the beginning is to reward even the slightest amount of quietness and build on that. She had 3 minutes of quiet and that is awesome! You could reward BEFORE she starts barking even if it is not very long. Eventually she will learn that barking gets nothing and quiet gets attention and rewards. 🙂 You have to start small and build on success. When you started learning math, you started with counting, then adding, then subtraction, multiplication, etc.. It took time..

is 7 weeks to young to do this? I tried locking my puppy in my bathroom and leaving her until she stops crying… the thing is she cries for 20mins… stops for 3mins and starts all over? is she still to young? should i wait until she is 12weeks or something? (no a new dog owner x.x just seeing how the new training works out…. ive been doing old school which is smacking when they pee in the house. i just want to change my style)

I am uploading a video that is all about clicker basics right now. That will help you learn how to use the clicker effectively. 🙂

  6. Helikaon9 says:

Cool that’s what i was assuming it was. I might pick one up; seems really efficient thanks!

  7. pamelamarxsen says:

That is a clicker and it marks the behavior that I like. It lets the dog know that I like that behavior and the dog then earns reinforcement for the correct behavior. This is the same method used in Zoo’s and at Sea World. 🙂

  8. Helikaon9 says:

What’s that clicking sound before you drop the treat?

  9. pamelamarxsen says:

I think I was using his daily dog food (dry kibble). When I was training my puppy, I would carry around his daily food intake and simply reward every behavior that I liked. I would interrupt unacceptable behaviors with my kissy noise that I conditioned to mean something great is about to happen, so you need to look at me. 🙂 Hope that helps! You can use any meat, cheese, dog food, baby food, freeze dried raw dog food, and anything that your pup finds valuable that is healthy.

What treats are good for puppies during training time? I have a shih tzu maltease mix.

Every dog is different. Some pick things up very quickly and others take a little time. I love clicker training, because you can start training RIGHT away, it is humane, effective and fun for both trainer and trainee. :) I call everything “cues” and to me the difference is a cue is a request to do a behavior. A command is a do it or else get a correction. If you train your dog what you want him to do and he is rewarded for good behavior, he will choose the proper behavior. 🙂

  13. pamelamarxsen says:

This training session was about 5 minutes long and I probably only had to do one or two after this. Dogs pick up clicker training FAST and they learn to love their crate with this method. My dogs all sleep in crates without doors. They choose to go in the crates because they love them and feel comfortable there. You can work on the invisible barrier training with the crate door at first. check out kikopup for some vids on barrier training. I have a few also.

How long did this actually take? I’m thinking about getting an IrishDoodle (Irish Setter/Poodle) and I want to clicker train her. But I want to know how long it takes to do these sorts of things? Does it take days, hours, months?! And after she and I learn this command, will she stay in there with the door open? Well just wondering if anybody has this information for me, if so, get back to me. I’d love to hear from you. About my breed of choice and about the command…

  15. nicolebodea says:

Lol I bet Isabelle was the most fond of this training session. She’s like the queen of the household! :PP

  16. pamelamarxsen says:

Funny that you noticed that! Bandit was on the floor hanging out and Isabelle was on the bed. When I would click and treat Twix the other two got food for just hanging out being calm. 🙂 It was great for them to start learning how to be calm around Twix as he worked!

  17. nicolebodea says:

I love the crunching in the background! 🙂

  18. pamelamarxsen says:

I hope you would know that I would never just toss him in his crate. I want him to love it! Bandit loves his crate and will go in when ever he chooses and he always goes in to sleep with the door wide open! It is so important to me to make sure my dogs love everything that I do with them.

  19. hunkymonkeykaine says:

Great video Pam! Twix is doing a truly awesome job learning how to operate his environment:). I really like how you are teaching him that being in the crate is a positive place to be versus just shutting the door and letting the puppy cry for hours.

  20. thistlemiss says:

Yes. I saw your great video on the subject. A lot of people do leave their puppies in the crates or pens too soon though. They don’t have the time to be with their puppies 24/7 at first.

  21. kikopup says:

I like to reinforce the area the dog has to be left alone in, so even if I were training the dog to be in a crate, but leaving the dog in a pen- I would play “crate games” with the dog in the pen. Or if the dog was just being left in a room- play games with the room. No “poisoning” happens through conditioning. I would worry more about someone just leaving there dog in a room/crate/pen without working on conditioning first.

  22. kikopup says:

    Awesome!!! Well done Pam!

  23. pamelamarxsen says:

Oh, you can use a playpen, but Twix would just pee in there and I did not want that to become a habit. He will not pee on the pee pads. He will pee right next to them. So, he is not ready for the playpen yet. 🙂

  24. pamelamarxsen says:

Also, if he is next to me, I can prevent any potty accidents! 🙂

  25. pamelamarxsen says:

He is with me unless he is sleeping in his crate and everytime he goes in his crate he has ice cubes for teething, a teething bone, a toy and a kong with some cream cheese in it. I want him to LOVE his crate. I know what you mean. Some people just toss them in as a way to get stuff done, but I just have him on leash and he has to be next to me. If he lies down when next to me doing dishes etc. I drop food between his paws. It is good to be next to mom. hehe!

  26. joly457 says:

That was pretty awsome when she opened the crate,BUT you didnt really explain anything about crate training. what size is right, how to get dogs confortable in them, how NOT to use them as punishment, how long puppies can be left in them, who knows what else you DIDNT explain,PLEAS DO ANOTHER ONE,I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!

  31. RockHailand says:

and how do you learn him to enter the crate by itself? And LIKE the crate?

  32. grettagrids says:

mine whines if I take her crate DOWN as she likes to nap there now. Using TREATS helped.

  33. homeslice2387 says:

wtf are you serious… your dog does this… no way…. my puppy just destroys my ethernet cables all day.. wtf

  34. andrewwright123 says:

You only said “put him in his crate”. but how does one get him used to it?

  35. toxicpuree says:

you shouldn’t leave a dog in a crate more than 4 hours at a time (aside from sleeping)

  36. quadfin1234 says:

    fuck no man!!!

  37. milkcocoa718 says:

I also work 10 hours a day, but at night and do not want a stranger in my home, my puppy is 10 weeks, can i leave her in the crate that long?

  38. milkcocoa718 says:

i know!!!! that was soooo hot!!!!

  39. turbodogvonder says:

A perfect example all my dogs will open their cages such as that and run ahead of me if I start to them. I used food from the very start. Use food each and every time so there is positive reinforcement and you can also feed them in it. I use them occassionaly but not all the time, only when traveling. But are awesome tool if properly introduced, good tip.

I use the crate for my dog at night it took a long time to get her into the crate at night she us to always put up a fuss (I even had to get help sometimes)but now (a year later) she goes in willingly and sometimes opens the door herself XD

  41. tomiri says:

holy crap your dog even opens the door by herself LOL

  42. eletendre says:

    Thank you.

  43. quinnbelle says:

wow the dog opened the door and everything. that was great.

  44. daveycard says:

Interesting to hear you say that you’d get mad at your dog long after they’d done something wrong. I guess the crate trained both you and your dog.

  45. eletendre1 says:

I would look into dog daycares and dog walkers in your area. It will make it a lot easier on you and your pup.

    Best,
    Eric
