www.pamsdogacademy.com http The purpose of this video is for the average pet dog owner that may need to use the crate for various reasons. This is not the same exercise as “Crate Games” by Susan Garrett. The whole purpose of this video is to shape a dog to go in his crate, stay in his crate, and learn to love his crate. There are many things that I listed in the video that the crate can be used for, but I forgot to mention in case of an emergency. When Bandit my Border Collie broken his leg at 6 months old, he was frantic. Poor guy was in pain and scared to death. My husband and I tried to pick Bandit up and he would not let us near him without biting us. I can’t blame him, he was injured. So, we went and got his crate and said, “Bandit, go crate” and he limped on in. I closed it up and off to the vet we went. Than god he loved his crate! For the next 8 weeks when Bandit was in a cast, he spent a lot of time in his crate. Again, thank God he loved his crate. So, the crate can be a valuable thing to have as an owner and a great bedroom for your dog. Here are a few things that I just could not fit into the video. If your dog has gone through all the steps of getting into the crate and now decides he will see if other behaviors will earn reinforcement, do not reward. I personally would wait and let the dog figure out that the game you are playing involves the crate. The dog can’t choose to change the game. However, if you think that the dog has had enough, you can end the

You could crate train, then when you are gone for an extended amount of time set the crate inside a play pen and this way he could come out of the crate if he wanted and still be confined to a smaller space. He would not be able to run around the whole house and potty. The most that I would leave my dogs in a crate was 4 hours. I would also make sure he has many things to keep him busy. Kong, chew bones (that can’t break off & cause him to choke), & toys (unless he destroy’s and eats toys).

i will be crate training my new puppy, he will be alone for 5 hours or so a day im wondering if at first i should just keep him in a safe area such as a bathroom while im at work then work on crate training in the afternoons and after work for a week or so. im afraid he will associate his crate as a bad thing/ punishment while im gone since he’s in there so long. what do you recommend we do while he is alone?

My dog pees in her crate even when we only leave her in there for an hour or 2 and she goes potty right before we put her in there. On other occasions, we will leave her for 5 hours and she wont pee at all. She sleeps in there through the night too with no trouble. We do exactly what you have instructed in your video. What do you think could be going on?

She sounds like she is afraid of it. Is it a wire crate like the one in this video? What if you fed her her dinner and put it in there and let her choose to go in on her own time at her own pace? You could put her crate inside a small area & then put her food in it. You could also take the pad that is in the crate and work with her learning to go to that crate pad without the crate. Once she is good at and loves going to the crate pad, try to put it in the crate. Just a thought….

My dog has figured out that if she sticks her head in the crate, she gets a treat. But she never offers anything more. I have been working with her for about a week now. I also feed her in the crate, and have never locked her in. But she always stretches out and tries to keep her back feet out of the crate. What should I do?

We have never traveled with our dogs and we have also never used a crate to take our dogs in the car. This is because both of our Setters where way to big to put in crates and they both loved ridding in the back seat. If we do travel we board them at out Vets. Our Golden weighs over 55 pounds and is even starting to out grow the new crate we got him. When he is old enough he will be given not only the run of the backyward but the Garage at night also.

Glad that works for you! I just personally think that crates are great for other reasons, travel, hotel stays so that the dog feels comfortable in new places, in case they need to stay at the vet in a crate/kennel. I have 3 dogs & my oldest rides in the car in her crate but was never crate trained. She sleeps on a dog bed at night. My two BCs were crate trained and when they are tired or when we stay in hotels they will go in their crate with the door wide open. So, it depends on the dog.

We have a pad for the crate and it doesn’t do any good. As I stated before we have at least temporarily solved the problem by putting him in out backyard at night. We have had two Irish Setters before him and I can’t remember ever crating them. We allways let them sleep in the garage.

  12. pamelamarxsen says:

You could try taking out the crate pad and conditioning him to love that and then after a few weeks or so, try putting his favorite mat (the one that was in the crate that you have built value for) back inside the crate and see if he will go in and lay down on it. Just an idea. Good luck!

I have a Golden Retriever and he is crate trained. He grew out of his first crate and we bought him another one and he is so scared of it he wont go in it. We have put his favorite toys in it and we have tried treats, nothing has worked. We have ended up giving up on the crate and putting him out in the back yard for the night.

    Alright, Thanks!

First you need to teach her to love it in the crate before you just put her in there. Teach her that it is her choice to go in. If she learns that choosing to go in earns her rewards, then she will start to love it. Watch the video and the steps and retrain her to love it. Then you can use the crate at dinner, but I would keep it close by and reward all her good choices while you are eating until eventually she can be in the crate at a distance from the dinner table. It might take awhile…

Every time I put my chihuahua in her crate she starts barking and crying like theres no tomorrow, I ever put her favorite bone in there, I put her in there because at dinner she wont stop barking at us to feed her even though she has a bowl full of food and water. Please help me, Thanks!

    @pamelamarxsen THANK U SO MUCH!

I am glad you are getting help from a professional. Make sure that person uses positive methods and not punishment methods with yelling, choke chains, etc. Some will say they are positive just because they will give the dog a treat, but if it seems mean to you, follow your gut and hire someone else. For “scared” dogs it is important to take things slowly and make sure the dog builds confidence. Corrections can set back the training. GOOD LUCK my friend!!

@pamelamarxsen he just hates it and no he doesnt need to go potty the ppl said they pee in there crate if there scared and hes 1 and we getting training for him

My new dog it’s 1 in the morning it’s crying like crazy and loud. HELP ME

  23. pamelamarxsen says:

I use real meat or cheese usually, but sometimes use regular dry dog food. 🙂 Hope that helps.

  24. pamelamarxsen says:

My dogs love their crate and will just go in there when they are tired. Hopefully your dog will love it just as much. 🙂 Send me a message if you have further questions. 🙂

  25. pamelamarxsen says:

This should help with separation anxiety as it teaches the dog how to be alone. However, I would make sure to train it in a positive way like I show in the video. You want the dog to love being in there and then only leave her in there a few seconds at a time until you can build up to a few minutes and eventually maybe an hour. It sounds like she does settle down in the crate and that is good! It is also good that you let her out when she is calm in there. 🙂 GOOD LUCK!
